Dollars And Donuts
“Where do you want to go?”
“Let’s go to the donut shop. You can meet me there. It’s right down the street from where I live.”
“Naw! Donuts aren’t healthy, they’re just sugar and fat!”
“Yeah, but they’re cheaper than coffee. And there’s lots to do there. You can have coffee, play the lottery, meet people…”
“That place is run down and scummy! The seats are all torn and besides, everyone speaks Spanish!”
“I know. I just like to go there when I have a little change, sit down, have a donut and some soda. I’ve been trying to get people to join me. It could be like a new thing, like going out for coffee, but instead going to have a donut. They’re cheaper and better than just a cup of coffee. It’s less than a dollar for a donut. The police don’t go there anymore. I think because of the song by the Bangles. ‘If you want to find all the cops, they’re hanging out at the donut shop…’ But no one wants to go there with me. I thought it would catch on. People could have a donut, talk, get to know one another, even go on a casual date, but no! Even one of the guys I live with walked down there and bought a donut with me, but he just wanted to go home and eat it! I said, ‘let’s hang out and talk, get to know each other…’ but he wasn’t really into that. My new donut fad just isn’t catching on. I remember when I first moved into the area and I saw it. I thought, Wow! A donut shop! I’m going to have so many friends!”
